Ukraine Investigates Assassination Plot

The alleged plot targets President Viktor Yushchenko (epa) May 17, 2007 -- Ukraine's Security Service is investigating an alleged plot to assassinate top officials, including President Viktor Yushchenko.

Valeriy Heletey, an official in Yushchenko's administration, said that he had information about a plot to kill Yushchenko, his chief of staff, and opposition leader Yuliya Tymoshenko.

Yushchenko is locked in a power struggle with Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, and is seeking to dissolve parliament and hold new elections.

Maryna Ostapenko, a spokeswoman for the Security Service, said the agency was investigating the allegations. (AP)
