Iran Detains Three Finnish Nationals

(RFE/RL) June 6, 2007 -- Iran has detained three Finnish nationals who allegedly strayed into its territorial waters during a fishing trip in the Persian Gulf.

Finland's Foreign Ministry said the three men were detained on June 2. They had gone on a fishing trip off Dubai and apparently got lost near the island of Abu Musa.

Finland's ambassador to Tehran said today Iranian officials assured him that the three were in good condition and had been treated well since their detention.

Iran regularly intercepts boats that it says had strayed into its waters. Earlier this year, it released a German and a Frenchman held for over a year after being picked up near Abu Musa while on a fishing trip from Dubai.
