Jewish Mass Grave Found In Ukraine

(RFE/RL) June 6, 2007 -- A mass grave believed to contain the bodies of several thousand Jews killed by the Nazis in World War II has been found in Ukraine.

Roman Shvartsman, a Jewish community spokesman, said the grave was discovered last month as workers were digging to lay gas pipelines in the village of Gvozdavka-1, northwest of the Black Sea port city of Odessa.

Shvartsman said the Nazis established a concentration camp near the village in November, 1941.
