Polish President Visits Lithuania


Vilnius, March 5 (RFE/RL) - Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski began a two-day state visit to Lithuania today.

Kwasniewski, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Povilas Gylys, and Polish Foreign Minister Dariusz Rosati joined in the signing of a border treaty between the two countries in the capital Vilnius.

During his visit, Kwasniewski is expected to discuss the bids by both countries to join NATO and the European Union. Also on the agenda are relations with Russian and conditions for Lithuania's Polish minority.

Meanwhile, Polish Defense Minister Stanislav Dobrzanski and his counterpart in Vilnius, Linas Linkevicius, today signed a treaty regulating Lithuanian and Polish military flights. The two defense ministers also plan to discuss a joint peacekeeping battalion.

In addition, Lithuania intends to officially invite Polish troops to participate in joint military exercises with Denmark this summer.
