Khabarovsk, April 24 (RFE/RL) - Russian President Boris Yeltsin says he will not cede territory to China.
Yeltsin was commenting in the Russian Far East city of Khabarovsk last night during a stopover on his way to the Chinese capital of Beijing.
The demarcation of the Russian-Chinese border is a thorny issue in relations between Moscow and Beijing. According to the 1991 agreement, Russia is to cede China more than 1,500 hectares of its territory. The agreement has been met with opposition among citizens and officials in Russia's Far East.
However, a Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Panov, said the border issue is not likely to figure in Yeltsin's talks with Chinese officials.
