Achkoi-Martan, Western Chechnya, May 17 (RFE/RL) -- The Russian news agency Interfax reports that fighting between Russian troops and Chechen separatists continued throughout the night near the western Chechen stronghold of Bamut.
An Interfax correspondent in the area says that Russian forces continued shelling Chechen separatist positions near Bamut and the village of Achkhoi-Martan.
The report says that Russian troops have gained control of the northern part of Bamut. The report could not be independently confirmed.
The Interfax report contains no word on casulties among Russian troops or Chechen separatists.
