Reported Assassination Attempt on Zavgayev


Moscow/Grozny, June 28 (RFE/RL) -- Russian news agencies are reporting a failed assassination attempt on the Moscow-backed leader of Chechnya, Doku Zavgayev.

Interfax quoted Chechen Prime Minister Nikolai Koshman as saying that security officials had discovered and disarmed five mines which he said were intended to blow up Zavgayev's car.

Itar tass quoted Vladimir Zorin, deputy chairman of the Russian government commission on Chechnya, as saying the plot was carried out by people opposed to the peace process.
