Council of Europe Condemns Russia over Chechnya

Strasbourg, July 24 (RFE/RL) -- The Council of Europe condemned Russian military operations in Chechnya today.

Leni Fischer, speaker of the Council's parliamentary assembly, accused Russian military officials of showing, what she called "scorn and indifference" to all the principles and values of the European human rights organization.

This is the second time the Council of Europe has condemned Moscow over its actions in Chechnya since Russian President Boris Yeltsin was re-elected last month, say correspondents.

Russia joined the Council of Europe last February. Fischer said that peace in Chechnya is one of the conditions which Moscow agreed to in joining the 39 member-nation organization based in Strasbourg, France.
