Prominent Tajik Politician Arrested in Moscow

Moscow, July 25 (RFE/RL) -- Russian authorities today arrested Davlat Khudonazarov, a prominent opposition politician from Tajikistan.

Russian authorities tell RFE/RL that Khudonazarov was detained after a routine check of identification papers in Moscow. They said his name appeared on a "wanted list" provided by Tajikistan's Interior Ministry.

Russian authorities say Dushanbe has been notified of the arrest. Moscow is awaiting an anticipated request for extradition.

Khudonazarov was a deputy in Russia's former Supreme Soviet. In 1991, he ran for president of Tajikistan and gained 30 percent of the vote, but lost to Rakhmon Nabiev.
