Tirana, July 26 (RFE/RL) -- A senior Albanian justice ministry official was shot dead this morning outside his home in the suburbs of the capital, Tirana, according to Western reports.
News agencies quote unnamed police and justice ministry officials as saying Bujar Kaloshi was killed and an unidentified woman seriously injured by two assailants. Police said the gunmen later escaped in a car.
Kaloshi, who was a political prisoner under Albania's former communist government, heads the Justice Ministry's prison department.
Witnesses said the woman, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was recovering in a hospital.
Albanian Defense Minister Safet Zhulali visited the scene shortly after the attack and spoke to Kaloshi's family.
