Slovak Construction Worker Kidnapped In Chechnya

Grozny, July 30 (RFE/RL) -- A citizen of Slovakia has been taken hostage in Grozny, the pro-Moscow Chechen Interior Ministry said today.

Stefan Hajdin, an employee of the Czech construction company Stavoinform, was taken hostage yesterday, said a ministry spokesman. Hajdin was kidnapped by a group of unknown people dressed in police uniforms, he said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the abduction. But a number of specialists on reconstruction projects in Grozny have been kidnapped in the past by Chechen separatists.

Officials at the Czech Embassy in Moscow said that the Czech and Slovak embassies are working on the case. Slovak embassy officials say a request for help has gone to the Russian Interior and Foreign Ministries.
