Kazakhstan: Afghan Refugees Reportedly Attacked

Almaty, 20 August 1996 (RFE/RL) -- RFE/RL's Kazakhstan service has received reports of a recent assault on Afghan refugees in Almaty.

On August 11, armed men broke into an apartment building which houses Afghan refugee families. Inhabitants were beaten and robbed, and one person died of his injuries.

An organization called the Society of Afghanistan Women has demanded a meeting with Kazakhistan's government. The organization also sponsored a strike in front of the Kazakh Parliament building.

About 1,500 Afghan families live in Almaty. Most of them are former students who were in school in Almaty during the Soviet era and are now afraid to return to their homeland.
