Romania: President Iliescu To Declare Candidacy For Re-election

Bucharest, 27 August 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Romania's incumbent President Ion Iliescu is expected tomorrow to officially declare his intention to seek re-election in the November 3 election.

As part of his early campaign, Iliescu is expected to assemble parliamentary deputies to present them the final text of the Romania-Hungary treaty, which is expected to be signed next month.

Extremist parties in Romania have harshly criticized Iliescu over the treaty, and nationalist leader Gheorghe Funar -- whose party remains a member of the governing coalition -- has called for the removal of Iliescu and Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu.

In what correspondents say is a clear move to increase Iliescu's re-election chances, the government yesterday announced a freeze on some prices, government guarantees of bank savings up to a certain amount and a pension increase.
