Former U.S.S.R.: Production Drops In Most Areas; Several Show Increases


Moscow, 3 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Tajikistan reported the greatest recession in industrial production in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for January-July 1996 according to CIS statistics released yesterday, reports RFE/RL's Turkmenistan Service.

Tajikistan's production dropped by more than 25 percent compared to the first seven months of 1995. Interfax news agency quotes CIS statistics as showing a continued production decline in Azerbaijan (nearly 9 percent), Russia (5 percent) and Ukraine (about 3 percent), compared to the first seven months of 1995.

The CIS statistics show production increases for several members, with Turkmenistan's production rising more than 29 percent in the first seven months of this year compared to last year. Turkmenistan's production had shown steep declines in each year since 1990.

Kyrgyzstan reports a production growth rate thus far this year of nearly 11 percent. Moldova's production increase is nearly 10 percent this year compared to last. Georgia and Uzbekistan have also reported significant production increases.
