Tajikistan: Prisoner Exchange And New Talks Subject of Meeting

Dushanbe, 3 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- A possible exchange of prisoners of war and a new round of talks on the Tajikistan conflict were the subjects of a meeting today between Tajikistan President Imomali Rakhmonov and the United Nations special envoy on the Tajikistan conflict, German diplomat Gerd Merrem.

The U.N. observer mission in Tajikistan will work on the technical details of a prisoner exchange. Merrem said Rakhmonov would like to meet opposition representatives in Dushanbe, and that Rakhmonov still plans to meet top opposition leader Said Abdullo Nuri in the near future, reports RFE/RL's Tajikistan Service.

Russia is trying to arrange a Nuri-Rakhmonov meeting in Moscow, while recent, routine talks on the Tajikistan conflict have been held in Ashgabat. A new ceasefire agreed at talks in Turkmenistan in July has not been honored.
