Georgia: New Round Of Abkhaz Talks To Begin Today

Moscow, 16 September 1996 (RFE/RL) - Another round of talks on settling the political status of the separatist Abkhazia region of Georgia is scheduled to begin today in Moscow.

Georgian and Abkhaz delegations met last week in Moscow for negotiations mediated by Russia and the United Nations. No progress was announced.

Our correspondent says the focus of the talks beginning today is expected to be the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Georgian refugees who fled Abkhazia.

Georgian government forces lost Abkhazia to separatists three years ago after 13 months of fighting. A predominantly Russian peacekeeping force now monitors a ceasefire in the region.
