Copenhagen, 20 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- The United Nations' refugee agency today criticized what it called a unilateral decision by Germany to begin repatriating Bosnian refugees next month.
Christine Berthiaume, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, also urged the German government to be flexible in implementing its decision.
She said 60 percent of the 320,000 Bosnian refugees in Germany originate from areas now under the control of Bosnian Serb authorities. She added that neither security conditions nor the number of destroyed homes in Bosnia permit mass returns.
