Tajikistan: Government-Opposition Talks in Tajikistan

Dushanbe, 26 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Representatives of Tajikistan's government opened talks with field commanders of the Tajik opposition. The talks over the last several days focus on areas where recent clashes have occurred. United Nations observers are participating in some of the talks.

RFE/RL reports tensions are still high in the Tavil Dara region east of Dushanbe, but also reports relative calm since a new cease-fire agreement was signed ten days ago.

Itar-Tass news agency reports these talks are expected to be the basis for a new round of negotiations on the Tajikistan conflict, expected to be held in Ashgabat early next month.
