Uzbekistan: Japan, U.S. To Participate In Gold Mining

Tashkent, 3 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Japanese and American companies are to participate with Uzbekistan in a major, joint gold-mining operation, say Japanese reports.

Itar-Tass news agency says a contract on the joint venture was signed today in Tashkent with Uzbekistan's State Committee on Geology and Mineral Resources.

The Japanese reports say the total cost of the project will be an estimated $200 million. It represents the first large-scale participation by Japanese companies in a venture in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan ranks seventh in the world in estimated gold reserves to be mined.
