Estonia: Border Agreement With Russia Could Be Near

Tallinn, 9 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Estonian Prime Minister Tiit Vahi said yesterday that a border agreement with Russia could be concluded before the end of the year.

Vahi said at a news conference that a lot of work had been done, and because of this he believes it will be possible to sign an agreement within this year. But he added that Estonia will remain firm concerning its demand for recognition of the 1920 Tartu Peace Treaty, which says Russia agrees not to interfere with Estonian sovereignty.

Talks with Russia are scheduled to continue at the end of this month. Almost all technical questions have been settled, but the parties have failed to come to an agreement over political aspects of the pact.
