Chechnya: Russian Military Reports Minor Skirmishes

Moscow, 16 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Four Russian soldiers were wounded overnight when Chechen separatists opened fire at Russian military checkpoints in the breakaway republic, says the Russian military command in Chechnya.

Chechen separatists did not comment on the accusations and the reports could not be independently confirmed.

Meanwhile, Itar-Tass reports that Russians and Chechen separatists are jointly investigating clashes that reportedly erupted yesterday between pro-Moscow and pro-separatist Chechens in the Urus-Martan region, south of Grozny.

It is not clear from the reports if there were casualties.

A joint Russian-Chechen commission was set up as part of a peace agreement signed on August 31 between Russia and the separatists. It is responsible for monitoring violations of a ceasefire signed between the two sides also at the end of August.
