Russia: Yeltsin Records Radio Message About 'Problem Of Power'

Moscow, 24 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- A Kremlin spokesman says Russian President Boris Yeltsin has recorded a radio message to address the "problem of power" in Russia.

Sergei Yastrzhembsky told journalists in Moscow today that in his message, Yeltsin reminded all Russian politicians that Russia has already made its presidential choice until the year 2000, when Yeltsin's term expires. According to Yastrzhembsky, Yeltsin told all Russian politicians that "it is high time to cool down the presidential race."

The press secretary said that the message, recorded today, will be broadcasted tomorrow on Russian state radio.

Yeltsin was re-elected last July for a second four-year term. He is now preparing for heart surgery in a sanatorium outside Moscow. Doctors have said they expect to operate in the second half of November to improve the blood supply to his heart.

Yastrzhembsky said doctors are completely satisfied with Yeltsin's condition before heart surgery and that preparations for the operation were going according to plan. According to Yastrzhembsky, "there is no change to the schedule laid down for the operation."

Yastrzhembsky said Russian medical specialists had received some equipment from U.S. heart surgery pioneer Michael DeBakey and might use it during the operation.
