Washington, 5 November 1996 (RFE/RL) -- The United States yesterday congratulated opposition leader Petar Stoyanov on winning Sunday's presidential runoff elections in Bulgaria.
U.S. State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said it was a decisive victory for Stoyanov and that the United States looks forward to working with him.
He said the U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria and other U.S. officials will soon be contacting Stoyanov to wish him well.
Burns said the U.S. hopes very much that Stoyanov will be successful in encouraging further economic and political reforms in Bulgaria.
