Almaty, 13 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Almaty is suffering a natural gas shortage. Our Almaty correspondent reports that Uzbekistan, which provides southern Kazakhstan regions with natural gas, has cut off supplies because of Kazakhstan's debts to Uzbekistan (estimated at about $6 million).
Some southern regions of Kazakhstan (Jambyl and Chimkent Oblasts) have been without natural gas for two months. Kazakh officials are in Tashkent trying to resolve the issue. A similar dispute with Russia over energy supplies led to a cut off of natural gas supplies to norther Kazakhstan during the summer.
