Kyrgyzstan: Akayev Signs Land Law

Bishkek, 25 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Kyrgyzstan's President Askar Akayev today signed a decree on private land ownership. The decree states that every citizen can buy, sell or leave land as an inheritance. Our correspondent reported last week tht the effective date of the decree is January 1, 1997. Kyrgyzstan's Parliament has debated property ownership on several occasions, without taking action.

Prime Minister Addresses Parliament

Kyrgyzstan's Prime Minister Apas Joumagilov addressed Parliament today on next year's budget and amendments to the tax code. Joumagilov addressed a session of the Legislative Assembly (Lower House) today, and addresses the People's Assembly tomorrow. More than 100 amendments to the tax code have been proposed by deputies, and Joumagilov said he would take the amendments into account as the government prepares the final draft budget.
