Kyrgyzstan: Group Rallies Against Land Ownership

Biskek, 29 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - A group calling itself the Kyrgyz Patriotic Movement has protested a new land ownership law. Yesterday's Bishkek rally involved about 15 people.

One rally organizer told our correspondent that the new law will have little benefit for common people, because, he asserts, most state property has been privatized, and is now controlled by former communist officials or foreign firms. A leader of the Parliament, Bekmamat Osmonov, met with the protesters.

According to the decree signed by President Askar Akayev this week, every citizen can buy or sell land, or leave land as an inheritance. The decree's effective date is January 1, 1997.
