Russia: Conference On Rebuilding Chechnya Raises Questions

Warsaw, Moscow; 11 December 1996 (RFE/RL) - Poland's Ambassador to Moscow, Andrzej Zalucki, was summoned to Russia's Foreign Ministry today to explain a conference on rebuilding Chechnya. The conference is being held in Warsaw.

Our correspondent reports Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Krylov demanded Zalucki explain who organized the conference. Poland's PAP news agency quotes Zalucki as telling Krylov that Polish officials had nothing to do with the conference.

The conference was sponsored by organizations in Warsaw and Krakov, which group ethnic Chechens and those who support Chechnya's aspirations for independence.

The mayors of Warsaw and Krakow are attending the Warsaw conference, and a news conference featuring the widow of slain Chechnen President Dzokhar Dudayev, Alla Dudayeva, was held at Warsaw City Hall yesterday. The First Deputy Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Chechen government, Khozahmed Nukhayev, is also attending the conference.
