Prague, 13 December 1996 (RFE/RL) - A document believed left behind during a recent visit by a Russian parliamentary delegation has surfaced in Minsk, and is being widely reported. Our Minsk correspondent quotes the document on closer Belarus-Russia integration as proposing dual citizenship, formation of a Supreme Soviet of the Union, a referendum on unification in each of the two states, and election of a Union President. The Russian delegation was headed by Sergei Baburin.
Crackdown Continues In Minsk
Our Minsk correspondent reports that the 60-year-old sister of the Justice Minister has been arrested and sentenced to ten days in jail. She was convicted of taking part in an unsanctioned meeting, and coming to the assistance of a young man being dragged into a militia car after the demonstration. Reports say such incidents are occuring more frequently on the streets of Minsk.
