Dushanbe, 13 December 1996 (RFE/RL) - Senior Russian envoy Yuri Baturin has been holding talks in Dushanbe with Tajik President Imomali Rakhmonov.
Baturin arrived in the Tajik capital yesterday, shortly after a provisional truce went into effect between Tajik government forces and Islamic rebels.
There is no word on the substance of his discussions with Rakhmonov. However, the two had been expected to review the truce, as well as to prepare for next week's scheduled meeting in Moscow between Rakhmonov and opposition leader Sayid Abdullo Nuri.
Itar-Tass reports that Baturin left Dushanbe today on a trip to the Tajik-Afghan frontier, to visit Russian border guards.
Tajikistan yesterday protested to the United Nations against alleged violations by Islamic rebels of the truce, in the town of Garm, 150 kilometers east of the capital.
Forces loyal to Rakhmonov defeated their opponents in a civil war in 1992 forcing them to flee to neighboring Afghanistan. The opposition has waged a guerrilla war against Rakhmonov since then gaining some territory earlier this year.
