Europe: Germany And Poland Want To Handle High Seas Murder Case

Warsaw, 16 December 1996 (RFE/RL) - Germany's Federal Criminal Office (BKA) says it wants two Polish sailors accused of murder on the high seas to be tried in a German court.

German authorities have taken steps to make sure that both suspects are extradited to Germany. But our correspondent in Warsaw says Polish authorities are trying to take charge of the case.

The sailors are accused of killing the captian and first engineer of the German vessel "Janna" while the boat was in international waters off the coast of West Africa. Polish media report that nine other Polish crew members overpowered the two suspects after they allegedly threw the victims overboard. The ship's captain reportedly was German.
