Czech Republic: Havel Released From Hospital

Prague, 27 December 1996 (RFE/RL) - Czech presidential spokesman Ladislav Spacek says President Vaclav Havel has been released from hospital and allowed to return home.

Havel, 60, is recovering from surgery performed December 2 in which half of one lung was removed after doctors discovered a small cancerous tumor. He subsequently developed pneumonia and doctors had to perform a tracheotomy to help his breathing.

Spacek said yesterday it is not yet clear whether Havel's vocal chords will be strong enough for the president to deliver his traditional new year's address on Wednesday. The speech might be delayed to a later date when he has fully regained his health.
