Almaty, 21 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Kazakh Oq Jetpres information agency says a city in North Kazakhstan is without heating for the second week running. The heating in Kokshetau was switched off after an accident at a heating station and some 15,000 flats are now without heating. Currently temperatures in the Kokshetau region are minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Kazakh Workers Strike Over Unpaid Wages

Our Almaty correspondent reports workers at the Achisay Polymetal plant in Southern Kazakhstan have laid down tools in protest over unpaid wages. Yesterday they were joined by public transport workers.
