Brussels, 29 January 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Newly-appointed Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov is in Brussels today for meetings with leaders of the European Union (EU) and NATO.

Our correspondent in Brussels reports that Stoyanov has begun serious discussions with the European Parliament about the political crisis in Bulgaria. He is scheduled to meet later today at NATO headquarters with NATO Secretary General Javier Solana and NATO's Council of Ambassadors.

Tomorrow, Stoyanov is scheduled to meet Jacques Santer, president of the EU's Executive Commission, as well as with officials in the Western European Union, a western European defense organization. Stoyanov plans to return to Sofia early Friday.
