Albania: OSCE Sees Potential For Serious Crisis

Vienna, 12 February 1997 (RFE/RL) - The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) says it is deeply concerned at the violence in Albania, and is calling on all sides to respect the rule of law.

A statement issued today by the current chairman of the OSCE, Denmark's Foreign Minister Niels Helveg Petersen, says the Albanian situation "contains the potential for a serious crisis." He called on all sides to refrain from the use of violence.

The OSCE statement did not accuse anyone of responsibility for the situation, nor did it comment on the background. It said that the "current crisis can be solved only by peaceful means and through dialogue between those involved."
