Albania: Anti-Government Protesters Clash With Police

Tirana, 14 February 1997 (RFE/RL) - Anti-government protests are continuing in Albania where angry investors are demanding the resignation of President Sali Berisha and the return of their life-savings following the collapse of high-risk investment schemes.

In the southern port city of Fier, about 100 riot police tried to keep about 5,000 angry protesters from the central square and the town hall. The demonstrators threw stones and the police retreated. An uneasy calm was reported in the city.

In another southern city, Vlore, about 7,000 people gathered and chanted anti-government slogans. Four people have died and 150 were injured in nine days of violence in Vlore.
