Ukraine: Albright To Talk With Foreign Minister

Washington, 28 February 1997 (RFE/RL) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Hennady Udovenko will be in Washington next week and is scheduled to have talks with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on March 7.

State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said yesterday it will be a chance for them to sit down and review bilateral ties.

He said the United States has close relations with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and through a substantial aid program tries to encourage economic reform.

Burns said the United States believes Ukraine's size and location will make it one of the most important countries in Europe in the next century. He said Washington views ties with Kyiv as a priority.
