Kishinev, 5 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Itar-Tass news agency says that Dumitru Motspan was elected speaker of the Moldovan parliament today, after 55 of 104 deputies voted for him.
Motspan is the leader of the Agrarian Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament. He was elected Vice Speaker in 1994. Motspan was elected speaker at the second attempt, after he failed to get the required 50 percent of parliamentary votes in January.
He was then competing for the Speaker's chair with another Vice Speaker, Dumitru Diakov, who failed to receive sufficient support from the leading faction in the parliament. In today's vote, Motspan was the only candidate.
