Sofia, 12 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Top officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) met Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov today to discuss aspects of the agreement between the government and the IMF aimed at stabilizing Bulgaria's economy.
Our Sofia correspondent reports no details were announced about Stoyanov's meeting with Michael Deppler, Director of IMF's First European Department, and Anne McGuirk, head of the IMF mission to Bulgaria.
The agreement between Bulgaria's caretaker government and the IMF was said to be ready last week, but its contents have not been made public. Our correspondent says advice from international financial experts may have prompted the Bulgarian government to ask for improvements in some of the terms. Plans also call for introduction of a currency board in Bulgaria.
