Kazan, 17 March 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The president of Russia's Tatar Republic, Mintimer Shaimiyev, today welcomed the appointment of Nizhny Novgorod governor Boris Nemtsov to a senior post in Russia's next government.
Earlier today President Boris Yeltsin offered Nemtsov the post of first deputy Prime Minister in Russia's next cabinet.
Interfax news agency quoted Shaimiyev as saying that Yeltsin's offer to Nemtsov is "very important and timely."
Shaimyev said Nemtsov's presence would strenghten the government. He also says that Nemtsov, together with the other first deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais, will make the implementation of economic reforms "more radical and realistic."
Yeltsin is expected to unveil his decision of the final composition of the government before leaving for Helsinki for a summit later this week with U.S. President Bill Clinton.
