Washington, 18 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - White House spokesman Michael McCurry says the United States understands the strong feelings Russian President Boris Yeltsin has on the subject of NATO expansion.
McCurry made the comment in response to a question about Yeltsin's statement yesterday on NATO and on U.S.-Russian relations, saying they were unequal.
McCurry said the United States understands the context in which public statements are made. He added Washington wants to work quietly to work through any differences that exist on questions related to the future of Europe.
