Poland: Roma Camp Dismantled

Warsaw, 25 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Polish police, assisted by sanitation department officials, have dismantled a Roma camp near the port city of Szczecin. About 200 people, who Polish police identified as Romanian Gypsies, were evicted.

Authorities said the camp constituted an "epidemic hazard." A few weeks ago, city officials reported several cases of jaundice among Roma children, who have been hospitalized. Polish authorities say they will deport Roma who illegally prolonged their stay in Poland to Romania via Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Poland's Ombudsman (human rights advocate), Adam Zielinski, says foreigners' rights are frequently violated in Poland. Zielinski said police and prosecutors routinely mistreat illegal aliens, especially those who request political asylum.
