M/E - Renewed clashes in Hebron, amid renewed diplomacy

Jerusalem/Hebron, 10 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - Israeli troops shot tear gas and rubber bullets at stone throwing Palestinian demonstrators in Hebron early today in the third day of clashes there. The incident close to the Jewish enclave in the city occured as a top level Palestinian delegation left Gaza on the way to the United States for talks on salvaging the crumbling Mideast peace process.

Speaking on the Voice of Palestine Radio before leaving, top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said that the delegation will demand an end to unilateral Israeli actions in Jerusalem as a condition for a resumption of negotiations. Erakat said that he will also demand that Israel implement the interim autonomy agreement and that Israel disarm its settlers.

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in The Hague today for three days of talks aimed at changing what he says is a pro-Palestinian bias on the part of the European Union.
