Russia: Yeltsin Sacks Senior Military Commanders

Moscow, 11 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russian President Boris Yeltsin today dismissed General Vladimir Semyonov, the commander of Russian land forces.

Russian news agencies say the announcement was made today by presidential spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky.

Three other top Russian military were also reported to have been fired: Colonel General Anton Terentyev, Semyonov's first deputy in charge of training; Vice Admiral Vyacheslav Kharnikov, First Deputy Commander of the Northern Fleet and Admiral Igor Khmelnov, chief of the navy's general staff.

No reasons were given for the dismissals. They coincide however with a crackdown on corruption and plans to shake up the armed forces.

Semyonov had already been suspended and accused of "actions incompatible with his post."
