Tajikistan: World Bank Approves $12 Million Credit

Washington, 11 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - The World Bank says it has approved a $12 million credit to Tajikistan for a government effort to help the country's poorest citizens.

The bank says the funds will be used to help about one quarter million people, many of them living in Tajikistan regions hardest hit by the civil war in the country. The funds will help provide housing and financial assistance for displaced families. Money will also be set aside to improve food production, water supply and sanitation.

The World Bank says the credit will support the Tajik government's efforts to restore social and economic stability.
