Tajikistan: Government Admits To Arrests


Dushanbe, 14 April 1997 (RFE/RL)- Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov acknowledged that eight members of the United Tajik Opposition (UTO) are currently being detained in Moscow. Rakhmonov made the admission in a phone conversation with UTO leader Said Abdullo Nuri today.

An opposition charge that 11 opposition activists were under arrest in Moscow led to a walk out from peace talks in Tehran by the opposition last week.

On Saturday two other members of the opposition were arrested in southern Tajikistan, one, Sobir Kalendarov is the brother of an opposition field commander. Also, today an opposition delegate to the cease fire monitoring committee reported that two other opposition members were taken into custody last week in the Faizabad region.
