Romania: Foreign Minister Meets Jewish Group

Washington, 22 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin told officials of a Jewish organization at a meeting in Washington today that his country needs to teach more about Romanian Jewish history.

Severin spoke at the international headquarters of B'nai B'rith, one of the largest Jewish organizations.

B'nai B'rith said in a news release after the meeting that Severin acknowledged there are good and bad points to Romania's Jewish history.

Richard Heideman, B'nai B'rith international chairman for public policy, told the Romanian official the organization would welcome Romanian President Emil Constantinescu speaking about the country's role in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Romanian and Ukrainian Jews during World War Two.
