Albania: World Bank Hopes To Send Mission Soon

Washington, 24 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Johannes Linn, says the bank hopes to send a "small mission" to Albania as soon as security conditions permit.

Linn told the bank's Board of Executive Directors yesterday in a special meeting on the situation in Albania that the biggest need is to "speed-up the transfer of resources for emergency reconstruction efforts and critical imports."

The bank's resident representative, Carlos Elbirt, returned to Tirana last Friday, rejoining the local staff which kept the office open throughout the crisis.

The bank and the European Commission plan to closely coordinate their support for a recovery program for Albania along with the International Monetary Fund and the governments of Greece, Italy and the U.S. which are active donors.
