Yerevan, 28 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - The Armenian parliament today debated ratification of a treaty clarifying the status of Russian military bases in Armenia.
Our correspondent reports that Armenian parliamentarians unexpectedly questioned several provisions of the treaty on financing the Russian military installations. Some parliamentarians expressed doubts whether Armenia can provide the funding called for by the treaty.
Most observers predicted quick ratification of the treaty in the Armenian Parliament. The Russian State Duma quickly ratified the accord earlier this month. Armenian legislators are due to continue debate on the treaty tomorrow.
