Turkmenistan: Severe Food Shortages Raise Problems


Ashgabat, 6 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - Our correspondent in Ashgabat reports the price of bread in Turkmenistan has recently doubled to 1000 manats from 500 manats.

Turkmenistan still practices the Soviet-era, food-rationing-card system because of severe food shortages.

Health officials say poor nutritional standards and ecological problems have led to, among other problems, a dramatic rise in the infant-mortality rate.
