Romania: Luxembourg Supports Bid To Join NATO

Prague, 12 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea met Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean Claude Juncker over the weekend in Luxembourg.

Alexandru Herlea, the Minister for European Integration who accompanied Ciorbea, said in an interview with RFE/RL that Juncker fully endorsed Romania's bid for early NATO membership. Radio Bucharest quoted Juncker as saying he wanted to become "Romania's advocate" in NATO.

Romanian Defense Minister Victor Babiuc, who yesterday ended a two-day visit to Norway, was unable to enroll Oslo's support for the bid. He told Radio Bucharest that Norway has not yet "made up its mind" on which countries should be invited to join NATO at the July summit in Madrid.
